Aegina
18 NM southwest of Athens
Basically the first island we come to as we head south, down into the cruising ground of the Argo-Saronic area and is frequently used by us as a stop on the way to or from the Marina in Kalamaki (Athens). Known today for it’s pistachio growing, Aegina has some charming villages, beautiful coastline, and significant antiquities.
Aegina has a rich ancient history dating back to the Minoan era circa 2000 BC. During the 7th-5th century BC Aegina enjoyed increasing naval power and dominance until it’s competition with the navy of neighbouring Athens during the 5th century BC eventually led to its decline from power. The temple of Aphaea, circa 500 BC, still stands on Aegina today and is a wonderful example of ancient Greek architecture and history.
