Leonidio / Plaka
60 NM southwest of Athens
Located south along the mountainous coastline from Nafplio some 25 miles, the town of Leonidio lies in a valley with dramatic red-rock cliffs towering above it on both sides. Associated with Leonidio is the small fishing port of Plaka. Plaka was once the location of the ancient city of Brasiae which served as an important harbour and naval base for Sparta during the Peloponnesian war (431-404 BC). Today Leonidio is also known for it’s agriculture due to a fertile plain that stretches some 4 kms from the town’s edge to the sea, and produces a considerable amount produce.
A short 7 kms southeast along the coast brings one to the small town of Poulithra which is a fantastic spot to relax at the beach and then wander a few steps up to one of the excellent tavernas or cafes.
The Peloponnese is a fantastic part of Greece: Beautiful scenery, uncrowded beaches, cheaper prices, and wonderful people… And Leonidio and Plaka serve as the perfect gateway to this area.
